Bean gear available at the Highland Center and the activities and educational opportunities offered to guests.

Backpacker magazine identified the AMC as a club that encourages social activities and relationships along with hiking and outdoor experiences. The New York-North Jersey Chapter’s Young Members Committee was interviewed about their social activities. Monitor staff writer Jeff Novotny traced the long history of hospitality in New Hampshire’s Crawford Notch and featured the recently opened Highland Center at Crawford Notch, the AMC’s newest destination for adventure, learning, and lodging in this long-enjoyed location. In a related newspaper story, he described the variety of educational programs offered at the center, including “A Mountain Classroom” for school groups and new “Adventure Discovery Series” programs.

AMC offers tips on hiking solo

AMC Trails Director, Heather Clish, was quoted in this newspaper’s story about hiking alone. Clish prefaced her comments by encouraging people to hike with a group at all times, as it is the safer option. Clish added that, if you choose to hike alone, you should make your plans known to several people and should not depend on an electronic device (cell phone, GIS, etc.) for assistance.
Towns of the Appalachian Trail

An article about the town of Salisbury, Conn., and the portion of Appalachian Trail that passes through the area appeared in The New York Times. The newspaper article highlighted the value the Appalachian Trail has brought to the town, in terms of creating hiking opportunities for local residents as well as bringing customers (AT hikers) to the town’s businesses. The AMC’s Regional Trails Coordinator, Ted Weber, was quoted in the article.

In an issue devoted to familiarizing newcomers with opportunities in Boston, this tabloid mentioned the Boston Chapter’s Young Members group. The coverage included information about the Young Members email list and the activities of this active group. The piece also discussed the social opportunities available with the Boston Chapter. A photo in the publication depicted a number of young members on a hike.
