SOLO Wilderness First Responder
Oct 26-30 and Nov 2-6

This 80-hr course runs 2 consecutive weeks and uses the principles of long-term patient care, improvised resources, and varying environmental conditions as the framework for responding to medical incidents in remote settings. Lecture, hands-on practice, and simulated rescues emphasize injury prevention and decision making in emergencies.

Course graduates will receive CPR and Wilderness First Responder certificates. The WFR is the most widely accepted standard in wilderness medical care for professional outdoor leaders including mountain and river guides, wilderness trip leaders, camp and outing club leaders, rangers, and generally anyone who is responsible for the care and safety of a group in the backcountry.

The minimum age for this program is 18.  Course includes meals, lodging, instruction, handouts and certification upon successful completion.  Rates start at $837 for members.  For reservations, call 603-466-2727.

New! Guided Full Moon Snowshoe Tours
Dec 30 and Feb 27 at Great Glen Trails, Jan 30 and March 27 at Joe Dodge Lodge

Experience the wonder of a winter walk on the moonlit snow. Guests of Joe Dodge Lodge can join an AMC Naturalist for a guided full moon snowshoe walk. We will use our senses and the moonlight to navigate the trails, listen for owls calling, and explore the winter landscape by light of the full moon. International Adventure and Dinner Series
Every Wednesday January 6-March 31

Now in its 20th year, the International Dinner Series remains a favorite for AMC guests. Join us on Wednesday evenings throughout the winter for delicious international cuisine.  This 4-course meal is served family style and provides an excellent opportunity to meet new people as you discover cuisine from around the world. Dinner is followed by a presentation on the culture of the featured country each evening.

Dinners include soup or appetizer, salad, entrée, bread, dessert, coffee, teas and cold beverages.  Guests may bring their own beer or wine.  Dinner starts at 6:00 p.m.  AMC adult members pay $21 for dinner and children pay $10. Adult non-members pay $23 for dinner; child non members pay $12.  

Want to stay the night?  Lodging packages are available and include breakfast the next morning and Great Glen Trails ski pass in addition to the international dinner.  Prices for AMC members start at $57 and $62 for non-members. Introduction to Winter Mountaineering
Jan. 15-18; Feb. 18-21

Efficiently climbing moderate snow and ice terrain along with lightweight and low impact winter camping skills is the focus of this popular 3-day course. The course is a basic but comprehensive introduction to winter mountaineering. No previous climbing experience is required but participants should realize that this course is physically demanding. Components of instruction include use of crampons, use of the ice ax, glissading, self-arrest, ice climbing, snow climbing, snow & ice anchors, avalanche awareness, and an ascent of Mt. Washington.

The program includes instruction, technical gear, lodging, and meals.  The minimum age for this program is 18 (16 if accompanied by an adult). Winter Family Adventure Weekend
January 15-17

Bring your family on a winter adventure in Pinkham Notch! Intro to Mountaineering Skills and Ice School
Jan. 29-31; March 5-7

This two-day course combines roped ice and snow climbing in one of the best winter destinations in the East—the eastern flanks of Mt. Washington. The diverse and challenging alpine terrain is perfectly suitable for this course, which focuses on learning and refining winter mountaineering skills and efficiently climbing moderate snow and ice terrain.

Guided Lodge-to-Hut: Winter Family Adventure to Carter Notch Hut
Feb. 15-17

Experience winter during this backcountry snowshoe adventure. The Carter Range sits on the border of the newest wilderness area of the White Mountain National Forest and offers stunning wild scenery in February. Our trip begins with an orientation session at AMC’s Joe Dodge Lodge the night before we set out for AMC’s backcountry Carter Notch Hut. An equipment discussion and overview of winter ecology are the topics for our evening session before we set out as a group on an unforgettable opportunity to experience Carter Notch in winter. AMC Senior Interpretive Naturalist Nancy Ritger will lead the excursion.

This backcountry adventure is perfect for the experienced 3-season hiker looking to venture into the world of winter. Participants must be comfortable carrying a pack with sleeping bag over moderate terrain. Hut accommodations are rustic with wood stove heat for the common space and cooking facilities. Bunkrooms are not heated.

This package includes meals, lodging and guided instruction.  The minimum age for this program is 10.  Children must be accompanied by an adult. Member rates start at $215for adults and $136 for children. Non-member rates start at $225 for adults and $144 for children. National Ski Patrol Level 1 Avalanche Course
March 12-14

This 24-hour course is essential for winter hikers, skiers, and mountaineers who want to know how to evaluate risk for avalanches and avoid them in the backcountry.  Classroom time will focus on weather, snow pack and terrain.  Conditions permitting, the following 2 days will be spent outside in the avalanche terrain of Tuckerman Ravine.  There, we will apply the protocols of snow pack investigation, terrain analysis and route selection decisions we have learned. This course meets or exceeds the requirements of the American Avalanche Association for Level 1 instruction. Credentials are given upon completion.
